Final kick
The 2008 queerDOC festival will come to a close this week with a determined trip from the West to the Middle East in one of the most joyous expressions of sportswomanship you’ll ever see.
Football Undercover follows a Berlin women’s soccer team as they struggle against relentless bureaucratic odds to make a dream come true -” to travel to Tehran to play the Iranian women’s soccer team, who have never been allowed to compete with an international team before.
This group of sporty women just want to kick around a field and make some new friends, but when cross-cultural politics come into play, this game might not be so easy.
While in Tehran the largely lesbian team from Kruezberg must observe strict codes of conduct: homosexual sex is forbidden and, when on the field, players must wear hijab at all times. Funny, thrilling and inspirational down to the final goal.
info: Football Under Cover is on Sunday 14 September, 7pm at the Chauvel, Paddington.
Support the Star Observer… while you still can
LGBTQIA+ media is under threat. Queer content is censored by tech conglomerates who amplify bigotry and push out AI slop — so we receive less financial support than ever.
When our community is muzzled and intolerance intensifies, we need queer media more than ever. Your donation means we can continue paying queer journalists to write queer news.
Don’t rely on the straight lies of big tech – support Star Observer instead and donate now.
