Real Housewives of Melbourne star to ‘marry’ same-sex couple

Real Housewives of Melbourne star Gamble Breaux will ‘marry’ a same-sex couple during a commitment ceremony to be held at Melbourne’s upcoming Diversity Expo.

As an accredited minister of the Universal Life Church, Breaux said she’s excited to take part in the mock wedding and watch two people declare their love and commitment for each other.

“The Universal Life Church is a church for the gay and lesbian community because it approves same-sex marriage,” she told the Star Observer.

“So for the expo, I offered and asked if they wanted to hold a staged wedding… it won’t be legal, but we just want to have a bit of fun.

“It’ll be a light-hearted wedding for fun and laughs, so I hope everyone comes down and enjoys themselves, and brings their sense of humour.”

Breaux added that marriage equality is an important issue for her, and one that Australia should’ve well and truly passed by now.

“My step-son Luke is gay and I want him to be able to have a proper married life,” she said.

“Marriage should be available to all couples, and while the government recognises same-sex relationships, it’s time to let them have the ceremony and get married as well.

“You live longer if you’re married, and you tend to be happier… there are so many beautiful things that come out of marriage.”

Despite the advances in LGBTI rights that have been made, Breaux sees marriage equality as the next important step.

“Unfortunately there used to be so much you couldn’t do but now you can have your own children, which is exciting,” she said.

“Marriage equality means so much to so many people – and people are going to be in relationships regardless so let’s make it formal with equality.”

Breaux’s mock ceremony will be hosted as part of the first ever Diversity Expo, a Melbourne event designed to allow the LGBTI community to network and interact with community groups, organisations, and services.

Among the organisations present will be Minus18 for sexuality and gender diverse youth, and GLBT Disability Support Services (GLBTDSS).

Diversity Expo event director Paul Christoforou said it will be a great opportunity for the community to connect with other people and discover resources and groups they didn’t know existed.

“There are resources people know about but there are some people have no idea about,” he told the Star Observer.

“It’s about bringing them all together, and it’s not just for gay businesses but also gay friendly businesses as well – that’s why it’s also important to have a forum like this, so people can get in touch with them.”

Christoforou said it’s been exciting preparing for the same-sex commitment ceremony with Breaux, as couples have had to enter a competition saying why they want her to perform their ceremony.

“It will be really sweet for two people to get up and say ‘I love you, you love me, so let’s commit in front of everyone’,” he said.

“We’ve had some really sweet entries where people have expressed their love for their partner.

“We’d love to see everyone at the expo, it’s going to have really positive vibes.”

The Diversity Expo will be held on April 16 and 17 at the Melbourne Convention Centre.
