Search for a Queen of the Night

The Trikone Australasia social group for GLBT South Asians is holding a search for Bollywood’s Queen of the Night this Saturday August 18, in a beauty pageant for some of the most stunning drag queens from the subcontinent.

“The audience will get to howl and hoot for their favourite contestants who will all show up in over-the-top costumes to vie for the crown,” event producer and co-host Kunal Mirchandani told the
Star Observer.

“There will also be a lineup of entertainment throughout the night – ranging from live Bollywood singing to a sexy male burlesque, and even some bellydancing.”

With contestants set to battle it out in rounds such as talent showcase, glamour and bridal wear, Mirchandani said competition between the eight beauties was already fierce.

“They’ve all been hard at work shopping for their costumes, working on their talent, and planning their victory strategies.”

Unlike traditional beauty pageants where the focus is predominantly on beauty, Mirchandani stressed contestants would get to show off their personalities at the Queen of the Night contest, which will be held at the Red Rattler in Marrickville.

Sponsors such as ACON, The Photo Studio and TMT Makeup Studio have made it possible for Trikone to award a $500 cash prize to the winning contestant, plus $500 worth of makeup vouchers and photo portfolio packages worth $1850.

“Sydney definitely has a large and active South Asian gay and lesbian community, and Trikone Australasia provides us all the opportunity to network within and outside the group,” Mirchandani said.

“While we also have a significant trans community, some of the pageant’s contestants have actually never done drag before. But this event is all about shedding inhibitions, trying out new things, and having fun in the process.”
