A life of passion remembered

Lance Gowland’s full life of activism was celebrated by fellow 78ers, rights campaigners, and family on Saturday.

Never before seen photos of the man who was a Mardi Gras founder were displayed at the Gaelic Club, revealing the earlier married life of the activist who burst into gay rights campaigns after coming out.

But the familiar passion was undeniable as interview film clips of his 30th anniversary of Mardi Gras were shown.

Many spoke of his enduring commitment, including City of Sydney Councillor Phillip Black, fellow activist Ron Austin, and Liz Dodds representing the board of New Mardi Gras. Gowland’s son Chris had lived with him during his final years and also spoke at the wake.

Gowland died last month after a long battle with cancer.
