Therapy retreat for gay men

Darlinghurst-based private practice Therapy Space will again hold its annual Gay Men’s Personal Development and Meditation Retreat at the 30-acre Govinda Valley Retreat Centre next month.

The retreat, from June 17 – 19, will draw on therapeutic traditions, including meditation, group therapy and discussion groups. It will be facilitated by Peter East and Curt Mason, both counsellors from Therapy Space with specific experience in dealing with gay men’s issues.

East and Mason plan to draw a cross-section of men from different cultural backgrounds, ages and socioeconomic groups. One of the hopes of group work is that a ‘universality of experience’ will develop and with it, senses of isolation and difference, both imagined and real, dissolve.

“[With] relief from carrying secrets, greater self-acceptance of all aspects of ourselves, we’re able to understand something about ourselves better and perhaps make changes in ways that are going to serve our sense of happiness and wellbeing,” they said.

The cost of the retreat is $500 per person, with a maximum of 12 people allowed. The cost includes all accommodation, therapy and meditation sessions, and main meals.
