Putting the Pop back in Sydney

Putting the Pop back in Sydney

Sydney’s greatest purveyor of kitsch have returned, as the Pop Shop re-opens its doors at a new Surry Hills location.

It has seemed a little drab since the iconic shop closed its doors on Oxford St after 25 years of providing locals with fur-trimmed washing gloves, tiaras and delightfully naughty trinkets.

Long time fans can expect to see much of the same merchandise that made them giggle before, but there’s also a whole new range to explore.

Zombies are in, according to the Pop Shop’s co-owner Robert Tait. And geeks are in too, so we’ve got a lot of zombie and geek stuff, like geek temporary tattoos and the book Geek Dream Boats.
It’s humourous and funny things. People enjoy laughing and there’s always a new laugh.

The shop made an un-announced return to the scene last Friday, at the new address of 330 Crown St, and has already had a successful first weekend.

On the weekend it was great because we had that old community feeling back again, that we’d missed, Tait said.

We sold so much Pez over the weekend it’s bizarre. And then of course I’m doing my own t-shirts again with our distinctive style – I’ve done a t-shirt with glitter print, which says -˜retrenched and fabulous’, perfect for 2009.

info: The Pop Shop is now located at 330 Crown St Surry Hills.
