Melbourne’s Midsumma Pride March Matters Now More Than Ever
On 4 February 1996, Melbourne’s streets came alive with colour and defiance as Victoria’s first-ever Pride March stepped out in full force. Around 11,000 people came together in a moment that would reshape the city’s LGBTQIA+ history.
Founded in 1988, Midsumma had come to fruition as a bold response to rising discrimination facing Melbourne’s queer community, and as a homegrown counterplay to Sydney’s Mardi Gras.
When the idea of a pride march took hold in the mid-’90s, it was inspired by the global movement for queer visibility. But it quickly became something distinctly Melbourne: raw, community-driven, and built from the ground up.
Nearly three decades on, Midsumma Pride March has become one of Australia’s most recognisable celebrations. Reflecting on its journey, Midsumma CEO and Creative Director Karen Bryant told Star Observer in 2022: “The fact that the festival had close to 30 years of history before it took over Pride March meant that it evolved differently — the festival is its foundation, and Pride March is an important part of it, rather than the other way around.”
Inclusivity, accessibility, and authenticity remain at its core. The DIY approach and no-float concept is what makes it stand out, keeping it grounded in community rather than spectacle. It’s down to earth and about people walking side by side, sharing space, solidarity and showing the message of Pride.
The march still winds down Fitzroy Street in St Kilda, just as it did in 1996. St Kilda was a long-standing queer-friendly hub, and the palmlined boulevard along this route has long been the pulse of Melbourne’s queer scene. Today, it’s also home to the Victorian Pride Centre and countless community groups that carry that spirit forward.
At a time where queer rights are under attack and trans lives are treated like political footballs, a long-running, joyful community event like Pride March reminds us of what community power, belonging and unconditional love looks and feels like.
The Midsumma Pride March isn’t just a fixture on the calendar. It’s a statement that visibility matters and that the march toward equality isn’t over. So grab your friends, chosen family and loved ones of all kinds, and get ready to take your place in the crowd where you belong. Pride March is the time and place to show up, stand tall and strut with pride — and that’s more important than ever.
