A Star guide to Sports Day Out

With so many events, stalls and sports to try, Sports Day Out might seem a little bit overwhelming, especially for newcomers who can’t decide where’s best to start amid all the excitement. So here are the top picks of the day from a seasoned SDO pro and Team Sydney president Geoffrey Radford.

1. Press your pleats.
There may not be any tennis courts on hand, but you can certainly get acquainted with the folks at Tennis Sydney as you vie for the best tennis outfit of the day. The boys and girls from Tennis Sydney will of course also be on hand to assist you with a few backhand moves and sporting
fashion advice.

2. Dribbling will never be frowned upon.
It may seem intimidating at first, but there is really nothing to fear from a basketball court. So whether it’s about getting back to the sport you loved at school, or finding an all-new passion, head down to the courts to pick up some picks from the Sydney Spectres, who will be on hand to offer tips on how you too can become a Harlem Globetrotter.

3.Get your foxtrot on.
If you thought that dancing was something that only straight couples could get into, think again and discover your inner elegance at this year’s ballroom dance stall, hosted by DanceDance Hot to Foxtrot. Grab your partner, or ask an all-new crush to join you on the dancefloor for a lesson in fancy footwork. For Stonewall regulars, it might seem a bit odd at first, but practice will take care of that.

4. Increase the calories.
The most enjoyable aspect of the day would have to be the knowledge that, after a day of flitting from sport to sport, you are free to indulge in some hearty food -” absolutely guilt-free. Thankfully, Freezone and the Outfielders softball team will be on hand to assist you with this matter, with a sausage sizzle and refreshments stand.

5. If you can’t be a player, be a playa.
As the sun heats up and the various football matches, rugby games and running comps heat up, there’s sure to be eye candy abounding as everyone strips down to the bare sporting essentials. Voyeurism aside though, Sports Day Out is not just a day to get active, but an opportunity to get social and meet some new people in an inclusive, supportive environment, far away from the Oxford St bars.

info: Sports Day Out will be held at Sydney Boys High on October 12. Head to the Frontrunners stall around lunch time if you want to take on the Man of the Mountain or Woman of Steel runs.
