Anxiety – Ladyhawke

Anxiety – Ladyhawke

Let’s get this out of the way first: if you’re expecting to find more of the sugary electro-pop thrills of Ladyhawke’s debut here, you’re going to be disappointed. There’s nothing on Anxiety that matches the sugary pop rush of My Delirium or Dusk Till Dawn.

The clue is in the title. Anxiety is an altogether fuzzier, darker record than its predecessor, with the synths usurped by grungy guitars.

That’s no bad thing, and indeed, there are plenty of highlights to be found here. First single Black, White & Blue is the closest Hawko edges towards the big choruses of her debut, while Cellophane is a gorgeous, lighters aloft power ballad. Tracks like Girl Like Me and The Quick & The Dead show that her love of ’80s electro seems to have been replaced by a newfound appreciation for ’60s beat-pop.
