Convicts’ Bingham bid gathering pace

The Convicts bid for Sydney to host the 2012 Bingham Cup is well underway — the ‘Sydney Bingham Cup 2012’ Facebook group had over 700 members at last count, and the team has launched a star-studded online bid video.

The five-minute video, hosted by renowned gay photographer Paul Freeman, features filmed endorsements by sporting greats Daniel Conn (pictured — after the very positive reader response to the picture of Conn we ran a few weeks back, we thought we’d treat you to a second helping), Matthew Mitcham, John Eales and Peter Fitzsimons, while Freeman acts as tour guide around some of the city’s highlights. Sydney has emerged as one of the serious contenders to host the Cup, with Manchester, UK also taking its bid very seriously.

“It’s a very tight race and the cities are running neck and neck in the all-important online support,” Convicts president Andrew Purchas said.

“We are leading Manchester on Facebook [members] but now we have to catch up on YouTube views.”

To show your support for the Bingham bid, you can join the Facebook group and watch the video on YouTube by searching for ‘Sydney Convicts Bingham Cup 2012 Bid’.

Purchas said these shows of online support would go a long way to convincing Bingham Cup organisers that Sydney is a great place to host the gay rugby event.

“It shows the committee deciding on the bid that Sydney residents and Australians are very supportive of bringing the world cup of gay rugby down under in 2012.”
