Discrimination complaints on rise

The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission (VEOHRC) has seen a rise in complaints relating to sexuality and gender identity.

VEOHRC Acting Commissioner Karen Toohey said the Commission had received almost 70 complaints relating to sexual orientation and gender identity in the 12 months between 2010 and 2011, mostly in the area of employment, but also in goods and services provision.

“This a significant increase on the previous year and indicates more GLBTI Victorians are aware of their rights and are taking action to stand up for them,” Toohey said.

“We all have the right to be who we want to be and to be treated fairly and with respect without fear of discrimination or harassment.”

The VEOHRC saw a rise in complaints about discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation with 32 complaints in 2009-2010, increasing to 53 in 2010-2011.

Complaints relating to gender identity jumped from three complaints in 2009-2010 to 14 in 2010-2011.

  1. Of course complaints of discrimination is on the rise, with the Liberal/National Party of Victoria is setting the example by stripping many workplace protections from GLBTI out of the Equal Opportunity Act.

We have seen police with guns used to stop some people wearing rainbow colours at the tennis, while Ted Baillieu defends Margaret Courts assertion homosexuality is curable. Those who say anything against these acts of hate are labelled homosexual extremist, by the Liberal/National Party Cabinet.

Robert Clark spat out in parliament, homosexuality is a sick disease, and we molester children more quoting one student text. He went on to say “I believe homosexual practices form a destructive way of life, destructive to the individual and destructive also to other individuals who are brought into that way of life”. This is the Attorney General who has recently spoken about bring back the gay panic defence.

When the Liberal/National Party in Victoria strips our protections in the Equal Opportunity Act, they call it “Getting the balance right”. So according to the Liberal/National Party, it is not balanced if we have any of the same protections other citizens have. They want to make our birth a punishment, and create laws based on hate, the same hate inspiring Margaret Court to hate her neighbour, not love her neighbour. Every member of the Liberal/National Party in Victoria, including Clem Newton-Brown, voted to take our protections in the Equal Opportunity Act away.

So of course discrimination and hate crimes will continue to rise as they are sanctioned by the Liberal/National Party. We will continued to be killed, we will be denied jobs funded by government, but we will never surrender to the bastards who seek to make our birth a punishment.
