The Sydney Underwater Bushwalking Society (SUBS) is looking for help from the community in its bid to raise $10,000 for a local charity at this year’s Diving For Life (DFL) charity event.

Come October 20 SUBS members will fly to Phi Phi island off the coast of Thailand to take part in the annual Diving For Life charity event. Drawing in dozens of divers from around the world each year DFL raises money for a range of health-related charities which are chosen by the diving teams themselves.

Though SUBS is yet to settle on a charity for this year, their efforts raised $2,000 for the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation last year and funds for a Fijian HIV charity the year before.

Funds are raised each year through diving fees and an auction and raffle held on the last night of the week where individuals bid on prizes brought by other teams. SUBS is looking for members from the sporting world or community at large to donate items.

Club secretary Matt Kaine said in the past items with an Aussie flair have never gone astray.
In the past things like Aussie beach towels and T-shirts with Bondi have been quite popular items and last year we brought a boomerang and didgeridoo that auctioned off for quite a lot, he told Sydney Star Observer.

Of course, they have to be things that can be transported relatively easily. We’d really be interested in receiving vouchers for prizes that could be redeemed over the net. The American teams have tended to provide equipment, which is a little bit difficult for us to do, so we’d love to hear from anyone who could donate something smaller, or something that could be shipped.

We have approached Aussie Bum to see if they could donate anything and we’re waiting to hear back from them but, in the meantime, it would be great to get some support from other Team Sydney members or just people in the wider community.

In the past we’ve managed to raise up to US$2,000 and that was with only two or three members heading over. This year we have 20 members, so it is quite feasible that we could raise up to $10,000 that would come back to Australia in the form of a donation to a local charity.
