Greiner supports marriage equality

Former NSW Liberal premier Nick Greiner has come out in support of same-sex marriage, saying his daughter is in a relationship with a woman.

Greiner said he believes gay marriage is a “solidly conservative cause” and criticised Opposition Leader Tony Abbott for his continued oppostion to allowing Coalition MPs a conscience vote on the issue.

“The Liberal Party I’ve been a member of for 40 years is essentially the party of individual freedom, it’s the party that believes in conscience votes,” Greiner told Sky News.

“I have a family member, a daughter, who’s in a gay marriage, or a gay relationship, so I could be said to have a bias. But I think the notion of not giving people a conscience vote on what is quintessentially a conscience vote issue is just bizarre.”

  1. Tony Abbott has carved the Liberal Party into his vision of a gay hating scumbag called Abbott’s Jesus. Tony Abbott is not offering the Liberal Party to be the party of freedom now, or after the next election, he is all for the Catholic Nanny State. Remember Tony feels “threatened” by people like his sister. The LNP in Queensland is an example of a government governed by the Hate Thy Neighbour brigade of ant-God fundamentalist.

  2. I find it very sad that Mr Greiner would, in eefect, be asking Tony Abbott to break an election promise. When Julia Gillard broke so many promises there was outrage, but now it seems there are some who would PREFER Tony to do the same. You can’t have it both ways as there should always be accountability.
