The term ‘Vegas residency’ is usually associated with superannuated divas like Cher and Elton John, but it’s exactly what UK trance master Paul Oakenfold has been doing for the past couple of years, with a long-term stint at Las Vegas superclub Perfecto.

He said it was the grand showbiz connotations of a Vegas residency that drew him to the gig.

“That’s one of the best things about it. This is anything but the typical Vegas experience,” he told Sydney Star Observer.

“I think the first year really changed the way people view clubbing in Vegas, and in America for that matter. Most Vegas shows are set up so you buy a ticket and go sit in your seat. We’re bringing the dynamic of a Vegas show into a nightclub, so we’re really taking it in a whole new direction.”

Between shows, he also found time to collaborate with Madonna, co-producing the title track of her new greatest hits collection, Celebration. He had nothing but praise for the famously hard-working singer.

“She operates at such a high standard and it really motivates you to step up your game on every level. She’s got a strong sense of direction in the studio, but at the same time she’s very approachable and encourages you to give feedback on what’s being done.”
