Come Out’s crystals set to sparkle
The Come Out social group has announced a new free GLBTI dance night for the Canterbury area.
The inaugural Crystals @ Canterbury is on Friday, October 22 at the Canterbury Bowling Club, just a short walk from Canterbury railway station.
Come Out promotions officer Janice Waters said Canterbury was a good location for the group because it was only five suburbs from Surry Hills and just down the road from Newtown.
“Canterbury has evolved over the years to become very inner-city,” Waters said. “It is very much like what Newtown was 20 years ago.”
Waters said the venue was a “gorgeous little club with a laidback friendly feel to it”, with highlights including “cheap drinks, good old-fashioned friendly service and no attitude”.
The first Crystals @ Canterbury promises to be a night of uptempo party anthems with Fish the DJ playing hits from the ’70s to the noughties.
Come Out plans to make the night a regular monthly event and hopes to provide aspiring artists with the opportunity to perform in front of an audience.
Come Out president Alex Day said he was pleased to make Canterbury Bowling Club the group’s new home and glad be able to put on a free event in the suburbs that would accept people from all over.
“We want to offer people an alternative to the scene, and something extra to our schedule of events which includes BBQs, restaurant nights, community halls and day trips,” Day said.
“Canterbury Bowling Club will also be used for barefoot bowls, film and drama rehearsals, committee meetings, and much more, but for now, it is the home for Sydney’s newest GLBTIQ social dance.”
