Dancing under the glitter ball

Dancing under the glitter ball

It’s been two years but the queer prom is back, so gentlemen grab your gentlemen and ladies get your tuxes for the ultimate celebration on the Youth Week calendar.
Hosted by Twenty10, the Queer Prom has been designed, coordinated and decorated by the organisation’s young clientele as a way to have their dream formal experience in a GLBT-friendly space. For this year’s event they’ve chosen the theme, good and evil and there are some elaborate decorations in store.
It’s taking on the typical year 10 and 12 formals and in being Queer Prom, we’re taking the whole sexuality disclosure element out of it, Twenty10 coordinator Rebecca Reynolds explained.
As with most things we do at Twenty10 -” finding some time and a place where they can be exactly who they want to be for a night, whether that’s gay, lesbian, trans, whatever -” they can break away from some of those mainstream ideas and the limitations that come with a traditional prom.
The prom is open to anyone under the age of 26.
You can bring anyone you like, Reynolds said. You can bring your mother if you really like. Whatever is okay in the space.
The event will be an alcohol- and drugs-free event. That won’t be a problem, with a number of participants ready to dress for the theme.
Because the queer thing’s out of the way and they’re not having to address that, they’re starting to do a lot of exploration around some things that are seen traditionally as good and evil. So they’re playing with those ideas and I anticipate a lot of angels and demons on the night.
