Gay Greeks come together

Gay Greeks come together

Greek gays and those who love them will have their time to shine at the Imperial Hotel on May 5, with the first instalment of Club Adonis in more than a year.

Club Adonis is a not-for-profit Greek and queer social group which holds Sydney’s largest events of its type, celebrating Greek culture and acceptance in the LGBTI community.

“It is an avenue for Greeks and lovers of Greeks to socialise in a safe place, as many in the culture are not out,” organiser Paul Peroy told the Star Observer.

“It’s a place for them to meet people for socialising and an opportunity to mix with openly out Greeks too, to see how different life can be. It’s always a fun night.”

Tickets are $20 on the door, with proceeds going to recoup costs for future Club Adonis parties and to queer youth organisation Twenty10.

“In the Greek culture, often [queer] people find it difficult to find acceptance at home,” Peroy said.

“They are often left to fend for themselves, increasing their chances of homelessness, mental health issues and suicide. It is easy to see why we feel raising funds for Twenty 10 is so important.”

Looking ahead, Adonis plans to hold a club night every three or four months, with other social nights — including Taverna and speed dating events — in between. But before that, Peroy said he encouraged all of Sydney’s queer community to show their support of their Greek brothers and sisters at the Imperial on May 5.

“It’s open to anyone who enjoys Greek boys, girls and those in between, wanting to enjoy and celebrate Greek music and culture.”
