Gay MP in drink-driving accident

Openly gay Victorian Liberal MP Andrew Olexander has resigned after crashing his car while drunk early Sunday morning.

Olexander was heading home after a night of drinking when he crashed into four parked cars, The Australian reported.

Olexander was the first Victorian parliamentarian to come out and say he was gay. In 2001 he crossed the floor to support equal fertility treatment access for lesbians.

As the Victorian opposition’s Arts, Youth and Consumer Affairs spokesman Olexander had spoken several times on the need to get tough on drug and alcohol abuse in the community.

The Herald Sun reported Olexander had a blood alcohol reading of 0.15 after the accident.
