Heaven’s second coming

Heaven’s second coming

Heaven has played a vital role in providing a support network for western Sydney queers and this Saturday 20 June the GLBT social group will celebrate its second birthday.

Not only has Heaven brought queer entertainment to the suburbs, but it has also helped raise lots of cash for the Western Suburbs Haven.

We have tried to have a positive impact on the queer community out west by providing a safe and GLBT-friendly social dance for people to have a drink, a dance and catch-up, Heaven spokeswoman Beverly Buttercup told Sydney Star Observer.

We play a very positive role in promoting queer life out west by welcoming all those under the entire GLBTI rainbow flag. We are proud to provide a safe space for gays and lesbians, as well as cross-dressers and the transgender community.

Heaven recently shifted to the Northmead Bowling Club. As well as providing a place for western suburbs gays and lesbians to meet, it gives the area’s drag queens a local stage to perform on.

Buttercup said she hopes the night will grow so much in 2009 that it will eventually take over the entire club.

Our numbers are increasing with each dance and are the highest they have ever been, she said.

We attracted more than 140 patrons at our last dance, which is about double what it used to be.
Heaven’s second birthday will be a drag extravaganza and an opportunity to raise money for the Western Suburbs Haven.

info: Heaven’s second birthday is at Northmead Bowling Club, 166 Windsor Rd, Northmead, 20 June from 8.30pm. Entry is $10. Details: heavensocialgroup.zoomshare.com.
