Darlinghurst solicitor Jason Lee took out the Mr Harbour City Bear title on Friday night.

Bears, cubs, otters and admirers packed the Flinders Hotel for the competition, which saw eight people competing in a number of categories in the hope of taking out the title, the first time it has been offered in Sydney.

But it was the 40-year-old solicitor who got the judges’ vote after a long debate backstage following the completion of several intense rounds of competition that included detailed questioning as well as Bear Wear and Sexy Wear competitions.

I’m still in shock, but it was certainly good fun, Lee said after his win.

There are a lot of misconceptions out there about what Bears look like, and I will be keen to show people that Bears come in all different shapes and sizes, just like other parts of the community.

Lee will represent Sydney at the Mr Bear Australasia competition, held in Melbourne on June 20 as part of the Southern HiBEARnation Festival.

He will become the Harbour City Bears’ ambassador for the coming year, helping out at fundraisers and official engagements like the 2010 Mardi Gras parade, Fair Day and the highlight of the Bear calendar, Bear Essentials.

In other Bear news, the Harbour City Bears will be holding a fundraiser for ACON’s party rovers during their Den Night at the Flinders this Friday, 5 June, from 9pm.  Entry will be via a gold coin donation. And don’t forget the Bears on Sunday event, also at the Flinders Hotel, every week from 4pm.
And then there’s the Chunky party at the Clarence Hotel from 9pm.
