LGBTI getting the call to enrol to vote

A FEDERAL election is just around the corner with LGBTI issues including marriage equality and Safe Schools set to dominate the conversation, so two major rights organisations have teamed up to get the rainbow community involved in the action.

The Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (VGLRL) and New South Wales Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (NSW GLRL) have joined forces to call on the LGBTI community to ‘Enrol for Equality’.

The two lobby groups are working with other community organisations on a joint campaign on LGBTI rights in the lead up to the federal election and believe the more people enrolled to vote, the louder the voice of the community will be.

A double dissolution election is likely to be called on July 2 and VGLRL co-convenor Rachael Hambleton said people need to enrol as soon as possible – especially those who are 18 or about to turn 18 – “to show the Government that Australians everywhere believe in fairness and equality for LGBTI people – and will vote for it”.

“For the health, wellbeing and safety of our communities, it’s paramount that we ensure LGBTI issues are among the top of the agenda this federal election,” NSW GLRL Co-Convenor Lauren Foy said.

People can enrol to vote at: aec.gov.au/enrol.

  1. I have an idea, how about when the 45th Australian parliament opens they can pass a bill called a Constitutional Amendment (Guaranteeing Indigenous Recognition, Marriage Equality And Other Matters) Bill 2017 – take it to the Australian people, it will be approved that will allow –
    * marriage equality and also help repeal male references about the Governor-General
    * Repeal the section that says “make laws on the basis of race.”
    * fully-pledged recognition of aboriginal and torris straight islanders to there land and water and make reconciliation with these people (similar to state constitutions)
    * Repeal 20 outdated other sections that have no use in 2017!

  2. It is very clear in this 2 July 2016 federal election!:

    * Labor/Greens/Sex parties SUPPORT marriage equality!

    * Family First/National/Liberal/Christian Democrats/Katter/One Nation Parties OPPOSE marriage equality!

  3. I am not voting because I have seen the dregs and riffraff who meander in to vote because of compulsory voting.

Not only do I oppose compulsory voting, I want a franchise that is earned by people who actually know and understand the system and have reasoning skills.

You do not deserve the right to vote simply because you can draw breath!

    • Just figured this out! Now I just did some very clever research and found all along – there lies the problem, a country that has compulsory voting it is impossibly to allow gay marriage! No country has been legalising gay marriage with a compulsory voting system! For example 8 nations of USA, Canada, New Zealand, Scotland England and Wales, Ireland and South Africa. The answer is right in front of us the whole time! Abolishing compulsory voting would be better! Stupid people vote for stupid people! Smart people vote for smart people!

      • Belgium and Argentina both have mandatory voting, so this argument is pointless!

  4. When we become a Republic and I become the first Australian president my first decree will be to issue an order effective immediately to allow marriage equality and suspend all anti-gay laws in Australia!

    DRAFT READY AND WAITING:

    Civil Marriage Order Decree

    A) This Civil Marriage Order Decree is effective immediately.

    B) The purpose of this Civil Marriage Order Decree to to allow marriage equality between two adults affective immediately.

    (1) A civil marriage is a legally recognised state run institution between two adult persons only. This does not effect any religiously run establishment, they can continue and see fit to define marriage between a man and a woman, within their own institutional settings.

    (2) The federal Marriage Act 1961 is herby suspended indefinitely.

    (3) All other anti-gay legislation at a local, state, territory or federal levels is herby suspended indefinitely.

    (4) LGBTI people and HIV positive people must be treated within the upmost respect, dignity and honor within the Australian community. This includes the right to get married to another adult person of either sex.

    (5) This Decree binds the Crown.

    (6) All other Decrees previous to this one is herby fully repealed.

    (7) This Decree is not subject to retrospectively provisions.

    • I think you need a little more constitutional grounding

      (2) If you suspend the marriage act there is no law enabling marriage.
      (3) Would be struck down in a moment… no “Head of Power” to control state law.
      (5) Binding the Crown in a Republic….. Interesting.
      (6) Decrees? We don’t have decrees we have laws enacted by the Legislature.
      (7) Not much is in a country without a Bill of Rights.

Ruling by decree sounds a teensie tiny bit like a dictator rather than a President in a constitutional system.

  5. Time to name and shame the 10 ALP Senators who oppose marriage equality! We already named and shamed the 3 ALP lower house MPs who oppose marriage equality!

  6. Turnbull is attempting to turn back the clock with a vitriolic plebiscite that will liken you to a pedo when you watch TV or listen to the radio, or even simply get a bus. We will have the indignity of our taxes paying for the hate material rammed down our throats. The UK has seen many hate crimes, some resulting in death, since the marriage equality legislation was debated. Turnbull’s plebiscite is trying to get us spat on and worse. The plebiscite will kill more of us then Islamic State as it drags on. Turnbull is giving a pat on the back to the drunk idiots on the train eyeballing you, and is helping to push some of us doing it tough off a bridge. Your vote could stop his regn of state sponsored terror. Turnbull will have 15 Federal Police officers to protect him during the plebiscite, we will have nothing.

  7. To those not wanting to vote – you’re wasting an opportunity to get the Liberals booted out. And you can bet the conservative religious voters will be out in force voting for them. So, by sitting back and not voting Green/Sex Party/Labor, or any other progressive party, you are not counteracting the conservatives – therefore increasing the chances of another term of Liberal govt.
Voting does work – my electorate got rid of a homophobic bitch in the last state election, to be replaced by someone very supportive of gay issues.
Yes, politics is corrupt, but which do you want? More of Abbott/Abetz/Bernardi/Morrison, etc. with years of homophobic ranting to come? Or the chance of a less homophobic party either winning the election or at least holding the balance of power?

  8. Malcolm Turnbull can kiss my arse that cunt! Put the LNP/National/Liberal dead last on the green and white papers! Vote 1 Greens in both the lower and upper house on between 8am and 6pm on Saturday July 2, 2016! The ghosts of 1975 are here for the double dissolution federal election in 2016!

    • …but if you want marriage equality – GO OUT AND VOTE!!

Sitting on your arse won’t change a damn thing.

  9. Sorry I rather pay a fine, than to vote for a corrupt two party political system that is rigged and predetermined! Nothing will change!

    • Political system rigged?? By who? Freemasons? The Stonecutters? Bicycle riders??

If nothing changed…homosexuality would still be illegal.

  10. I will vote, when pigs fly! Labor promised marriage equality, then votes against it! We are all taken as complete fools! Nothing will change, I am 50 years old and seen it all before – its the same spin and lies everytime!

  11. All these people here who say they will not vote – you are advocating for a step backward, not forward. Whinge and complain but do nothing to actively change Government. The vote in Senate was not against Marriage Equality by the Greens – that is just a ridiculous statement, and if you actually took the time to read you would know there was a Senate change vote up and Labor tried to stop that by throwing in other motions. Greens have never voted against equality – in fact they lead the other parties (and always have) in LGBTI rights. What Greens did was to try to stop Labor from moving away from the very important motion that was already up for a vote.

Stop decrying all the parties and start becoming more involved, and then we may be able to make a change. The rest of us are fighting for all LGBTI rights – the least you can do is support us.

    • Excuses, excuses – no wonder why nothing gets done in our parliament! If I was the governor-general I would go straight to the Queen and FORCE a federal election on these politician cunts! Governments know how to waste money in the wrong areas! There should be a ban on all political donations and government advertising full stop! We will get into surplus budgets if they did just that! End the tax exemptions on all churches too while we are on the subject too!

  12. Yesssssssssssssssssss we are off to a federal election finally on Saturday 2nd of July 2016. Start the Labor Party Ads I say! I can finally vote out that money-laundering cunt Malcolm Turnbull!

  13. Yeah I will go out and vote – when hell freezes over! Labor my party I usually vote for will not win anyway with that anti-gay cunt Joe Bullock and that anti-gay bitch Deborah O’Neill! A month ago both the Greens and Labor voted AGAINST marriage equality in the Senate! Australia is hell for LGBTI people.

    • If Labor wins on July 2, we will have marriage equality and no plebiscite. Bill Shorten has announced he will introduce a marriage equality bill within 100 days of becoming Prime Minister.

(John – your history is wrong. In 2012 Labor promised a free vote on marriage equality – a promise they honoured. The Libs did not – and do not – have any free vote. Since 2012, the numbers in the ALP have shifted dramatically in favour of marriage equality – all but 3 ALP members of the House of Reps have declared in favour of marriage equality.)

      • Name and shame the 3 ALP members in the lower house, who oppose marriage equality please!

        • 3 ALP members who oppose Marriage Equality are Tony Zappia (SA); Marie Vamvikanou (Vic) & Chris Hayes (NSW).

          Source is Australian Marriage Equality

A free vote of all members of parliament after the election would see marriage equality carried – but if Turnbull is re-elected, we will be forced through his dumb-arse plebiscite, which he has refused to supply any details about (when it will happen, and critically, the question asked)
