Lifesaving not just for boys

Lifesaving not just for boys

Lifesavers with Pride, now rehearsing for its third Mardi Gras parade, has a lesbian on its committee this year and hopes more women will join.

Tara Martin is a long-time member of the North Steyne Surf Life Saving Club in Manly.

There isn’t a lot around for lesbians, generally, but lifesaving is a lot of fun and it keeps you fit, she said. And you get gym membership for a really low price too.

She signed up to take part in organising this year’s float because the community service is inclusive of everyone and benefits many during the summer months.

She hoped more women would sign up for the Bronze trials in the next season.
Rehearsals began two weeks ago, and after a slight confusion over the venue, will continue at North Bondi Surf Club on Thursday evenings.

The group has also volunteered 10 Speedo-clad lifesavers for Big Bingay, to be held at the Paddington RSL, Friday 27 February, 7.30pm. Bookings on 9206 2110.
