Marriage demand won’t wash away

Marriage demand won’t wash away

Equal marriage campaigners demonstrat-ed under the I Have a Dream mural in Newtown on international Human Rights Day last week, undeterred by the rain.

More than 100 people stopped by to sign postcards to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd demanding the end to discrimination in marriage legislation.

The rally was organised by Community Action Against Homophobia and Australian Marriage Equality, in support of the fight against Proposition 8 in California.

Speakers included Pat Eatock from the Aboriginal Rights Coalition, newly crowned Mr Gay Australia Ben Edwards, and Alex Greenwich from AME.

We need to get our message across to those who oppose our human rights in Canberra and the church. We do not threaten the institution of marriage, we can save it with thousands of same-sex couples ready to join with high levels of love and commitment, Greenwich said.

Sydney Greens councillor Irene Doutney was among those braving the rain for equality.

  1. Oliver, seriously, is there no end your inane attention-seeking drivel? Please, make a New Year’s resolution, for everyone’s sake.

  2. Olivere, “The Football obsessed, Beer drinking Macho Culture” describes me to the letter.
Are you saying I’m only tolerant of myself… you’re wrong.

As for the poor turnout, that will change once CAAH is removed from the picture.

  3. Yeah Oliver I bet you are glad the SSO website exists…Ironically it is probably the only legitimate site in Sydney that publishes your pro Adolf Hitler hateful garbage!

  4. James, Im all for your response to the above. I stand for what I beleive in! Im also proud that SSO exists where I can voice my concerns!!

  5. James and Oliver….mnnn…could be the perfect gay marriage..lol…sanctified by the christian church and blessed
    by Adolf Hitler.!

  6. Chris – you should consider shifting your desires from a Hillsong service to perhaps attending an anger management and diversity workshop. It would do you the world of good, and you know it.

  7. Oliver ..I do not take instruction from some out of touch queen who lives in Kirribilli and thinks Adolf Hitler “was missunderstood”

  8. Gay men will have sex with each other whether its legal or not, and have been for the last thousands of years! Religion was an Ideal created at one time but it doesnt mean we have to be a slave to it in the modern world. We dont also have to be a slave to Gay Activists either! Chris, we dont know if James is Religious or not. This is a forum where we can speak our minds and not be told by you, Chris, that we need to go somewhere else.

  9. Chris – I enjoy debating issues that affect broader society, so I come to the coal face and debate them with intelligent people like yourself.

  10. James , sure it was a poor turnout..so what!..the poor turnout is not going to stop society evolving to give equal rights to gay and lesbian people and those rights WILL include same sex marriage.

Before 1984 homosexual acts between consenting adults were illegal in NSW. Do you think gay men were not having sex with each other at this time???? Laws often lag behind society standards just as laws banning same sex marriage will look even more ridiculous and discriminatory in the future.

No James unlike you I do not believe in the great myth of religion. And I ask you again what pleasure do you as a religious ‘ straight’ person get from hanging around a website designed for the gay and lesbian community and their friends. You James are not our friend. You are the moral equivalent of a member of the KKK hanging around a site designed for black people. You need to get a life ( Or get out of the closet ).

  11. Chris – why do you keep trying to portray me as a member of Hillsong? You really need to get over it. If I was ever going to attend a church, Hillsong wouldn’t really be my cup of tea. Perhaps it’s yours?

But the issue here is that 100 people turned up to demand the end to discrimination in marriage legislation. Put whatever spin you like on it, but to call it even a poor turnout is a bit of an understatement.

  12. James , you seem to know a lot about hillsong..LOL!!! Gay marriage will be recognised in Australia just like it is in progressive western democracies ..it is a sign of society evolving. There is nothing that the ‘happy clappers’ such as ‘straight'(lol) and ‘religious'(lol) James can do to stop it…PS. Proposition8 will be defeated on appeal in California.

  13. Would love to see Kevin Rudd’s response to the post card letters filled in at the rally. It is interesting that Kevin supports the riduculous 2004 John Howard Marriage Ban to continue when it shouldn’t even have been passed in the first place. The ban extinguishes the marriages of Australians who get married overseas in U.K.. N.Z., Canada etc, as soon as they enter back into Australia.

  14. James – It might be true that the Hillsong Church is expanding, but on a whole in Australia regardless of what religion the fact is the numbers of people who attend church has hit its lowest point in the post-war period, with around 20% who claim to attend worship services at least monthly.

My source comes from the Australian Christian Research Association: http://www.cra.org.au/pages/00000242.cgi

  15. It will be a long time before Australia recognises Gay Marriages. The Football obsessed, Beer drinking Macho Culture is only Tolerant of Gays to a certain extent.

  16. Chris – I don’t go to church so I wouldn’t know. But it’s funny to read that hundreds of people attend the Hillsong Church in Surry Hills every week, and that due to demand they need to expand.

  17. yeah James about the same percentage of the population who dedicate themselves to the great myth of religion who bother turning up to church on sunday…lol

  18. 100 people turned up? That’s an awesome turnout. It’s great to see so many people dedicated to this issue.
