Mitcham wins sports award
The winners of the 2008 Volvo GQ Men of the Year awards were revealed last night in the Ivy Ballroom with Matthew Mitcham taking out Sportsman of the Year. The sports star bravely announced to the VIP crowd what an achievement it is for a gay man to win this type of award.
The People’s Choice Man of the Year title went to Hugh Jackman. Melbourne mix-meister, Grant Smillie, won the GQ DJ of the Year and the Breakthrough Artist of the Year award was presented to Vincent Fantauzzo, whose poignant portrait of Heath Ledger was a stand-out in this year’s Archibald Prize competition.

Malcolm, he’s gay, remember – one never hears about him, but we get blanket coverage of drugged and drunken footballers!
Pity that the regard our community holds him in and the respect of the major sports reporters doesn’t seem to have translated into any sponsorships.
