Moore and Razer to debate marriage equality

The St James Ethics Centre is holding a debate on same-sex marriage on May 29 from 6.45pm at the City Recital Hall in Sydney’s Angel Place as part of this year’s IQ2 series of debates.

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore and political strategist Mark Textor will argue against the premise “Same-sex marriage should not be legalised”.

Textor has argued that the Gillard Government would not be taking a political risk in legalising same-sex marriage, while Moore is a long time advocate of the right for her LGBTI constituents to marry.

Arguing against marriage equality will be writer and broadcaster Helen Razer who opposes same-sex marriage despite being in a long-term same-sex relationship, and another speaker, yet to be announced.

“My once tranquil life is threatened by the sickness of weddings. This is just not fair,” Razer wrote in FHM earlier this year.

“Haven’t the homosexuals suffered enough? … The prefix ‘gay’ does not guarantee any improvement to an institution that passed its Best Before date at about the same time as James Blunt.”

The debate will be filmed by the BBC for a potential global audience of 70 million people, and will have four speakers instead of the usual six to allow greater audience participation.
Tickets are $32 per person or $22 for pensioners and students.
