Moore calls for protest vote
State election candidate and independent Sydney MP Lord Mayor Clover Moore has called on voters to lodge a protest vote against the major parties at Saturday’s NSW election.
“If you want to protest against Government inaction and the way the big parties conduct themselves — don’t vote for them. Look for candidates with a proven history in delivering,” Moore said.
“As an Independent, every single vote I cast has to be an informed vote based on the merits of the case, so you have to really think about how it affects the community you represent — every single vote is a conscience vote.
“That’s how democracy should work and it’s the difference between being an Independent looking after the interests of the community and being a member of a political party looking after vested interests”.
Moore warned that both the major parties had “draconian and outdated views when it comes to matters of equality for the GLBT community”.
She was fearful the election might deliver the balance of power in the Upper House to the Christian Democrats and Fishers and Shooters Party — and possibly even Pauline Hanson.
“Now more than ever we need strong leadership from Government but we also need independent champions to make sure the Government does have a plan and that we get the action we need,” Moore said.
“If any party has overwhelming control in both houses, the Government can do what it likes without challengeor through deals behind closed doors.”
Moore pointed to the 2010 passage of her Adoption Amendment (Same-Sex Couples) Bill allowing gays and lesbians to adopt children as couples and her Liquor Amendment (Small Bars and Restaurants) Bill in 2008 to allow small bars in Sydney as achievements she had made in office since being returned to her seat at the last state election in 2007.
Moore said as an independent she would take up the issues that the major parties didn’t want to know about, like climate change.
“Global warming is the biggest challenge we face, and yet the big parties are still arguing about what to do. I have a plan already in action in the City of Sydney, to reduce our emissions by 70 per cent by 2030, and similar actions can be used across the state,” Moore said.
@Chris – Please elucidate the correct analysis of the cause of the swing against Clover Moore. If you claim she withstood a massive statewide swing against Labor, that is clearly preposterous.
Btw alex your political analysis is bullshit ( talk about delusions of grandeur ( typical Tory !)
Alex I hear the sound of one hand clapping – yours ! At the end of the day a win is a win – clover won bartels lost ! She is the member for Sydney he is a mortgage broker from Potts point . In closing may I ask ‘ are there ANYTops in the inner city liberals ???
@Kos. If the vote in Sydney was all about –
1. The “Labor disease” – Clover Moore’s 3.7% drop in primary vote (just winning by a mere 54 votes) and her 13.5% drop in the 2CP margin may indicate electors have little confidence she is effective as an antidote to the “disease”, is a part of the problem or is irrelevant.
2. O’Farrell’s lack of policies – the drop in vote may indicate voters have believe she will be ineffective in holding O’Farrell to account,or will be irrelevant.
3. A judgment on her performance – the reduced vote indicates a fail.
Indeed the “Labor disease” may have been a factor that cushioned her against a much harsher judgment. As the electoral cycle changes over the next 4 years for Labor, she may be left only with the support of acolytes, as disillusioned Labor voters, who couldn’t vote Labor this time (but could never vote Liberal)return “home”. A “must do better” report card, if she follows the admonition, may be to her advantage.
@Alex Snide remarks eh? Pot Kettle Black. NSW does not deserve a “report card”. You don’t need to be a political expert to understand that the people needed to get rid of the NSW Labor disease (rightly so) & as such voted accordingly – that transpired to all electorates. Don’t delude yourself by the fantasy that Barry O’Farrell is some sort of messiah – he is lite on policy & he certainly ain’t a Jeff Kennett. I applaud Clover for winning in such as tough circumstances. Oh and I absolutely love the new bicycle laneways.
Kos – yes it is a democracy, thus an interchange of views is celebrated, preferably without snide remarks. I was pointing out the MP’s 70% effort in parliament, has resulted in her just winning the seat by only 54 primary votes margin, and turned the seat into the 15th most marginal seat in NSW (previously it was the 15th safest seat, or alternatively, the 80th most marginal). If you are of the view that does not deserve a “Must do better next term” report card, it would be interesting to know your reasoning.
Adrian…oops I mean Alex – Clover won…this is democracy. Get over yourself.
Congratulations to Clover Moore on winning the seat of Sydney, even if only narrowly.
Imagine what she could have achieved if she had put in a 100% effort (rather than just 70%). She would not have ended up about level with Bartels on the primary vote, she would not have dropped 12% on the 2CP vote, and she would not have dropped 2.1% of her vote in the Surry Hills booths, despite a massive increase of voters in one booth of 75% (compared with an electorate wide increase of booth voters of only 5%).
Her report card would read “Needs to do better next term.”
Haha Clover retains her seat. Sour grapes much???
bb. you must have lost your way..you are on a website for the gay and lesbian community..not the daily telegraph ! Obviously the majority ofvoters in the State seat of Sydney are very happy with Clover(and her bike paths ) ..SUCK IT UP LOSER !
johnygaylib…WRONG !!! ha ha you liberal collaborators lost lol
Ah yes, it’s all about the gay and lesbian community once again isn’t it? Well what about the rest of us? The majority! I’m sick to my stomach with this woman who caters only for her self interest and the minority – ridiculous bike paths being one of the most contentious! Just like Federal Liberal had to go, just as State Labor had to go, this woman needs to go too – with a fresh outlook, change and a broader perspective that includes, and satisfies, the majority of Sydney residents!
clover the libs are in. Count youre days over as lord mayor .Barry will audit youre council and find the waste of money lack of common sense and corruption on sydney city council , which there is alot of. So get use to being 1 of 3 independents with no voice in parliament. Eventually you will be a forgotten has been as you should be darling.
p.s the new libs will stand up for gay rights.
The day queens vote for the homophobic Liberal party in the seat of Sydney is the day hell freezes over. Adrian maybe you should have contested for the seat of, oh I don’t know, Ipswich or something – you’d probably have a better chance.
Go icaruslanding ! You have the self loathing liberal collaborators blubbing into their chardonay already ! Go clover congatulatipns on your victory tomorrow !
#icaruslanding…you finally got it right..if Clover Moore wins we will have to suffer…and suffer we will. You really are a nasty bit of gear mate. I guess you model your behaviour on Clover Moore.
Jane speaking off dog collars …what do you call a female dog…look in the mirror and you will see the answer….and a liberal apologist too …a loser lol!!!
Happy Days !! Just one more sleep and the voters of Sydney will once again re elect Clover Moore as the member of Sydney – As if it was ever in doubt ! She is standing against an arrogant self important amateur representing the homophobic liberal party while being gay himself durrr??? in the gayest electorate in NSW against the woman who has done more advancing the civil rights of gay and lesbian people in the history of NSW. A vote for the labor candidate is obviuosly a waste of a vote ,we love the greens but who could be greener than Clover – she is the original green.
All you snipy illinformed Clover haters will just have to suffer the will of the people – cos thats democracy AND AIN’T IT GREAT !!!
A vote for the liberal Party is a vote for the party who are preferencing Fred Nile’s Christian Democrate – it is a vote for homophobia !
Blake asks why we wouldn’t vote Labor in the Upper House. The answer is that the two people at the top of Labor’s Upper House ticket are Eric Roozendaal and Greg Donnelly, two of the nastiest people in NSW. Greg Donnelly is one of Parliament’s worst homophobes.
A vote for either Labor, Liberal/National, CDP, FF or Shooters and Fishers is a vote against our rights. Don’t do it.
#Icaruslanding maybe you wear dog collars too.
clover is an old out of touch woman. she wears a dog collar for gods sake. #Icaruslanding go to youre murdoch newspappers and go to the fashion section and teach youre goddess how to dress darling.
Jane
icaruslanding: Clover Moore also accepted donations from the Australian Hotel Association in the past however she has refused to admit it. Only in 2008 that she called for an ban for donations from that organisation.
However she also recieved donations from property interests.
In 2008 she voted against an proposal for candidates to put on the council website on their regular donations.
So she is an hyprocrite and needs to go.
Dave…..I don’t know how you come to such a peculiar statement.
Please explain how a Liberal government means Fred Nile ‘wins power”.
Perhaps you don’t understand the political system in NSW, how governments are formed or the parliamentary system in operation and are just parrotting some words fed to you by others.
I have always found thinking for oneself, preferable to being dictated to by others – especially where the information being fed is utter nonsense.
Oh Clover, Clover, Clover, we just Love you No Moore.
Go the Liberal Party
If the Liberals win government, Fred Nile will win power.
