Radio stars’ Mardi Gras love

Radio stars’ Mardi Gras love

As inspirations for Mardi Gras floats go, this could be the most unconventional yet.

It was a romantic dinner with Fifi and me. Afterwards I whipped her and she rubbed me down in oil, Triple M radio personality Marty Sheargold said, explaining how he and co-star Fifi Box settled on the idea of a parade entry.

I left with my nipples covered in wax.

The breakfast radio stars won’t be reprising that effort on 3 March, but they are promising something equally wacky when they step out for the Oxford Street spectacular.

In their first parade, Sheargold and Box will appear atop a giant cupcake adorned with sporting memorabilia -“ a reference to the Mardi Gras Objects of Love theme and the radio hosts’ radically different pursuits.

Fifi is absolutely obsessed by cupcakes and I am absolutely obsessed by sport. We’ve married those two things in the design of the float, Sheargold told Sydney Star Observer.

Box is encouraging her co-star to think creatively in the wardrobe department as she plans a fashion tribute to an international gay icon.

My preparations are fine. We’re being held up by Marty at the moment because he’s refusing to wear suspenders and bumless chaps, Box told the Star.

Box said the Triple M float, which would also feature the radio station’s logo composed of stilettos, was timely.

I have had a few drag queens ask if they can borrow my name in the past, so finally I can get out there and use it myself, Box said.

The radio diva is confident all will run smoothly despite her renowned tendency for mishaps, including once accidentally broadcasting an intimate conversation with a boyfriend.

Hopefully it works much like Marty and my relationship, which is combustible, intense but ever fun, Box said.

But it is Sheargold who has the last word.

Traditionally when Fifi is involved in things they don’t go well, he says.

If you come over and say g’day to us afterwards, try and get there before she’s had a [Bacardi] Breezer, [otherwise] you’ll end up in the disabled toilets with her holding her hair back.
