Second man arrested over Surry Hills online dating robbery

policeA second man has been charged by police in relation to the recent robbery and assault of another man in Surry Hills who had originally befriended one of his alleged attackers on an online gay chat site.

The incident has led to NSW Police again warning men to be cautious when using dating apps or online chat sites, and suggesting that people should always meet others in public when meeting for the first time and consider bringing a friend along.

On Monday September 16, the 34-year-old victim had agreed to meet one of the men inside an Oxford Street hotel room after first chatting to each other on a gay chat site.

Once inside the hotel room, a third man entered the premises through the balcony door before allegedly assaulting the 34-year-old. The man fled from the room while his two assailants allegedly took some property belonging to him which he had left behind in making his escape.

A 29-year-old man was soon arrested at the scene after police and emergency services were alerted. He was taken to Surry Hills Police Station and charged with aggravated robbery with wounding. However, his alleged accomplice managed to get away – that is, until yesterday.

On Thursday, police arrested a 26-year-old man in Gosford and took him into custody. The man has been charged with aggravated robbery with wounding and was refused bail to again appear at Gosford Local Court today.

The 29-year-old had earlier been refused bail, and will reappear in Central Local Court on Thursday, November 7.
