Student kicked out of school for lesbian parents

A child in the United States has been refused re-enrolment in a Catholic school because his parents are lesbians.

CNN reported gay and lesbian rights groups are angry over a decision made by the archdiocese of Denver not to re-enrol the child at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School in Boulder, Colorado next school year.

According to the report, GLBT Catholic group DignityUSA said until every student’s parents were tested on Catholic teachings, the action was discrimination.

Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation president Jarrett Barrios labelled the move “harmful”.

The archdiocese defended its decision, saying parents living in “open discord” disqualify their children from enrolment.

“The main purpose of Catholic schools is religious; in other words, to form students in Catholic faith, Catholic morality and Catholic social values,” Archbishop Rev Charles J. Chaput said in an online statement.

“What the Church does teach is that sexual intimacy by anyone outside marriage is wrong; that marriage is a sacramental covenant; and that marriage can only occur between a man and a woman.

“If parents don’t respect the beliefs of the Church, or live in a manner that openly rejects those beliefs, then partnering with those parents becomes very difficult, if not impossible.”

A small group of protesters rallied outside the church on Sunday.

  1. Does the Catholic school expel children of divorced/ remarried/ single parents? They are openly living in a manner contrary to church teachings. Why single out the lesbians?

  2. Another example of how religious institutions hide behind their chosen beliefs to driscriminate against us as a community. I wonder how many children have been expelled from the school for their parent(s) having extramarital sex….or stealing….or eating shellfish, which are all other sins/abominations in their bible.

So much for those global groups looking for ‘Acceptance’ in the catholic church.

  3. I would never trust my children with a Catholic School. Male Virgins in frocks telling others what do with there dicks and vagina’s, and led by none other then the Ex Hitler Youth Pope who’s brother is involved in a Child Sex scandal. And they say we are an abomination?

It is child abuse to send your children to such a school.

  4. The Catholic schools that I am familiar with in the Baltimore area are not funded by the government in any way. I doubt that the Boulder Catholic schools are either. I can’t imagine why a lesbian couple would seek out a Catholic school for their child. The school should have done an interview of the perspective parents about a year ago. I think that this conflict of values could have been dealt with earlier and not have created a problem for the child with their educational disruption.

  5. I agree with Carl’s point but given that practising Catholics are allowed in state schools (and the Catholic Church would scream blue murder if they were not allowed), gay parents should be able to access Catholic schools. And I bet church-run schools get government funding as they do in Australia. If so, the Catholic system has a hide excluding particular students.

  6. I just don’t understand why some GLBT parents are drawn to institutions that hate what they stand for. I’m gay and am lucky to live in CT, but I would no more wish to walk into such an institution as in this Catholic church than walk into Fred Phelps “church”. Move on, get into public school, and get the education that your child deserves. There’s enough hate masquerading as religion without feeding into it.
