Turnbull to stand again

Turnbull to stand again

Malcolm Turnbull, federal Liberal member for the inner city Sydney seat of Wentworth, has spoken to Sydney Star Observer about his decision to stand again in an exclusive interview.

“When I announced I wouldn’t be running I was truly overwhelmed by the number of people in the community and within the Liberal Party who urged me to reconsider my decision,” Turnbull said.

However, Turnbull said it would be “very unlikely” that he would lead the Liberals again.

On gay rights, Turnbull stated his opposition to same-sex marriage but said he saw the need for same-sex relationships to be given recognition, and was open to that being done under federal law.

“Unions between same-sex couples should not be discriminated against in any way, should have exactly the same degree of respect and recognition and entitlement as far as the law is concerned, but I think that marriage per se is a union between a man and a woman,” he said.

“But once you say that same-sex unions are entitled to the same rights as unions between men and women, be they formally married or not, there obviously arises a big question as to whether people are in that union.

“There are many cases where it’s quite hard to say whether two people living together are in a long-term relationship or not.

“That’s obviously why, if you go back centuries, it was convenient to register and record marriages … so there’s going to be an administrative driver there in favour of that.”

Turnbull also backed Opposition leader Tony Abbott’s in-principle support for federal anti-discrimination legislation.

He said he hoped to continue representing the interests of the gay community in Wentworth.

“I think that gay people in Wentworth know that both I and Lucy [Turnbull, former Sydney Lord Mayor] have been very strong supporters of their community … the support we’ve given to the AIDS Trust and the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation is an example of that over many years and from long before I was in Parliament.”

  1. Fuck off Turnbullshit!……the great pretender who does not believe in same sex marriage . A a bigger fuck off to the gay and lesbian poodles who would vote for him!

  2. The German Senate in Germany will also introduce a same sex marriage bill this year as well!!!!!

  3. In 2010 Iceland, Portugal, Nepal, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Argentina and Finland are expected to have same sex marriage made legal there – what is our excuse for not having same sex marriage here in good old Aus-land??????
I am yet to here a reasonable sufficient, un-biased and justifiable reason why same sex marriage can not be legal here in Australia! Currently The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada, Norway, Sweden, South Africa and the US jurisdictions of the District of Columbia, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Iowa have FULL equality of same sex marriage.

UK, New Zealand, the Australian Capital Territory and the US state of New Jersey have second-class equality called civil unions or civil partnerships. Ireland and the two Crown UK territories of both Isle of Man and Jersey could have civil partnerships by 1 January 2011. Also the US state of Hawaii could have civil unions by 1 January 2011 – if the Republican Governor approves and signs the bill into law [I am not holding my breath – she will veto it I just know Republicans]. The House voted 31-20 (and needs 3 more votes for an override) – the Senate already has enough votes for an override (the vote was 18-7).

  4. It is GREAT to see him back!!!!!

However he is a supporter of de facto and discrimination rights – but a bigoted idiot on same sex marriage implementation (just like Kevin Rudd the Dudd).

The Liberal party (or the “complete lack of liberty and liberarism party” [as I call it]).

Lets face it de facto same sex reforms only happened with a Labor Government in ALL the state and federal jurisdictions of Australia!!!!

Starting with the ACT in 1994, NSW and QLD in 1999, VIC in 2001, WA in 2002, TAS and NT in 2004 and SA in 2007. The federal government from 1 July 2009.

Gay male sexual conduct was legalized with a Labor Governments in 1972 in SA, 1976 in ACT, 1984 in both NT and NSW, 1989 in WA, 1990 in QLD, Norfolk Island in 1993 and the Commonwealth in 1994 – with the exeption of Victoria and Tasmania. In 1980 in Victoria it was a Liberal Government that legalized gay male sexual conduct and 1997 in Tasmania under a Greens-Liberal minority hung Government – with the final support in the “deeply ultra-conservative upper house”.

  5. Another one who has the “separate but equal doctrine”. Basically what old Malcolm is saying is that you aren’t good enough to be incorporated into marriage. He gives no resons for his objections to same sex marriage so I have to assume it is bigotry. Don’t be fooled Wentworth voters.

  6. I think it is time to allow gay marriages in the civil court. I am not religious therefore I feel that the Church can do what they like, but really at the end of the day gay couples have just as good a chance of staying married as heterosexuals and in the end what difference does it make. Who does it hurt if gays get married?

  7. Civil unions or civil partnerships – as they exist in New Zealand and the United Kingdom – are the answer.

  8. I agree Bill.

History showed many cultures have had Same Sex Marriage. It is documented in Singapore just a hundred years ago, in Ancient China, in Europe, and almost every culture.

The discrimination against Same Sex Marriage is new in history, and follows the rise of the Evangelical Christian.

Malcolm Turnbull could come out supporting an ETS when his party did not. He cannot seem to support Same Sex Marriage showing his personal views about us are disgusting.

    He promotes discrimination.
