Urban Lens on Sydney streets

An exhibition of photography by homeless men from the Matthew Talbot Hostel is being showcased in Paddington this weekend.

The works were the result of a photographic workshop last year by photographer Megan Carmont who is also a volunteering at the hostel, run by the St Vincent de Paul Society.

The workshops gave the men the opportunity to engage with others in a positive communal environment while developing a skill, exploring their creative side and achieving a sense of hope, dignity and self empowerment, Carmont said.

It gave them something positive to look forward to each week. The men also gained valuable experience in running the exhibition and learning to work with the gallery, suppliers and supporters. It gave them ownership over the whole process.

Info: Urban Lens is on exhibition until 17 March at Global Gallery, 5 Comber Street, Paddington.
