Church bans gay priests

The Melbourne Catholic Church has confirmed it is taking the Vatican’s staunch approach to test gay priests before they enter the clergy.
An Archdiocese of Melbourne spokesman confirmed Carlton’s Corpus Christi Catholic seminary had already started adhering to the Vatican’s guidelines.
Under the guidelines, potential priests who -œappear to be gay must be banned. The Archdiocese refused to comment further.
Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby convenor Hayley Conway said the move is a -œdangerous and offensive message about sexuality.
-œThey seem to be moving backwards in a lot of ways which is really unfortunate . . . especially for those who are Catholic and out, and there are a lot of them already struggling, she said.
-œIf the plan is to root out pedophilia or child molestation, targeting people with homosexual tendencies isn’t the way to go about it.
