Gay marriages on hold in California

A US federal appeals court has ruled this week that gay marriages will be put on hold in California while it considers the constitutional implications of a recent court decision to overturn the state ban.

On August 4, US District Court chief judge Vaughn Walker ruled the Californian ban on same-sex couples marrying was unconstitutional.

After the decision Walker said same-sex marriages could resume, however, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has overruled this indefinitely while the appeal is being made.

The appeals court has ordered lawyers to produce briefs between September and November for a hearing to start on December 6.
