THE last remaining gay bar on the once-thriving “gay strip” along Melbourne’s Commercial Rd in Prahran will remain a gay venue following a change of ownership.

Kama Bar ended community speculation around the direction of the venue with an announcement over the weekend.

The bar’s new management announced they will close the bar for around two weeks for refurbishment before re-opening.

Saturday saw the venue’s final night operating under the previous managers.

Previously the centre of Melbourne’s gay nightlife, the community’s presence on Commercial Rd has diminished over the past decade as new LGBTI venues and events opened north of the river in the Fitzroy-Collingwood area.
