Market on the market

South Yarra gay club, The Market has issued a press statement this afternoon saying it’s time for the popular nightspot to “say goodbye”.

“After 11 exciting, stimulating, memorable and fun-filled years of joy, pleasure and colour, it is time for us to say goodbye and for someone else to take The Market to a new level of entertainment for our proud gay community,” the statement said.

“Just as we took Three Faces and developed The Market … it is time for a new vision and a new passion.”

Over the years The Market has been host to international DJs such as Frankie Knuckles, David Morales, Deep Swing, Nicky Siano and DJ Spen as well as sponsoring the Midsumma Festival T-Dance.

The venue is now on the market, however does not yet have a buyer.

Farewell events have been planned through to New Year’s Eve and the club is likely to continue running until March next year.

The Market venue manager Steve Callanan told Southern Star Observer he learned the venue was to be sold last week.

“It’s sad to see it go,” he said.

“We’ve been a safe place to go and party and I think we’ve done that well over the years.”
