Trekking for charity

A Melbourne couple will put their fitness — and a knee reconstruction — to the test in July in a bid to raise money for HIV work.
Travis and Cindy Finch will take on the 98km Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea to raise money for the AIDS Trust of Australia.
Cindy told Southern Star family history sparked the decision to set out on the adventure, with her grandparents involved in World War Two.
“My grandfather was a Japanese prisoner-of-war and my grandmother was stationed in Darwin helping with the war … so the trek is something I’ve always wanted to do,” she said.
The pair are now in training for the two-week trek and Cindy — who’s represented Australia in international karate championships — is positive her recent knee reconstruction won’t hold her back.
“The trek will be a challenge. It’ll be interesting to see how the knee holds up, but it should be fine.”
Cindy has a younger brother who’s gay. She said the couple chose the AIDS Trust because they believe the wider community is still complacent about the threat of HIV.
“There’s just not as much talk about it these days,” she said.
“Someone on my Facebook page said, ‘Why are you raising money for that?’ I just think there’s not the awareness.
“It can still happen to anyone.”
The couple, who both work in the printing industry, will pay for the trek costs themselves so all money donated goes to the AIDS Trust. They hope to raise $10,000.
Donations, which will be directed to the AIDS Trust, can be made at the ‘Everyday Hero’ website.
All donations over $2 are tax-deductible.
