Mardi Gras came early this year for gay and lesbian volleyball players as sportspeople from up to 15 countries were represented in the teams competing at the Freezone Volleyball Competition last month.

Six courts at the indoor sports halls at Olympic Park were filled with top players who hammered it out for over five hours.

Seven teams played hard games to produce the winning A Division Team, based at Broadway Gym, Ultimo. Kaiata Navy fought to the end but were outplayed in the grand final, said Sports Council secretary Wally Salinger.

Ten B division teams were divided by performance. Salinger said the final was no walk in the park, as seasoned campaigners the Freezone Zephyrs, captained by Yumi Pham-Vu, fought to the final serve to be rewarded with the silver medal.

The bronze medal was won deservedly by the consistent performance of Sachicks, who earned their B1 status in the heat of the day, he said.

Safe Sets White defeated FFS to take out the gold medal with the heat and exhaustion influencing all on-court action after the lunch break. Team Dig It were bronze medalists, wrapping up the very strong influence of women at all ability levels within the tournament.
