Hustlers back in the game

Brisbane’s gay and inclusive rugby union team, the Hustlers, is looking to expand upon their great success in 2012 by increasing its fans and members for the year ahead. After a seven-year hiatus, the Hustlers reformed in 2012 and went on to host the national gay rugby tournament, the Purchas Cup in September.

This tournament was the first time a national gay rugby competition had been held, with the Sydney Convicts and Melbourne Chargers taking part. The team proved that they had what it takes to be a powerhouse team with a second placing.

The Hustlers are equally as proud of their efforts to combat homophobia in sport and break down barriers within Brisbane and Queensland.

“In 2013 we’re aiming to provide an outlet for the GLBTI community that is rare in Brisbane – an outlet for us to play a contact sport in a competitive environment. We believe that a team like this is invaluable.” Hustlers president Aaron Flemming said.

The Hustlers will be holding an open day on January 13 at New Farm Park.
