SUBS raise big for GLBT charities

Sydney’s diving team SUBS raised almost $18,000 for GLBT charities as part of the 2008 Diving For Life event in Thailand in October.

Diving For Life vice-president Kelly Thiemann announced last week that SUBS will be able to nominate which charities will receive its share of the auction money raised as part of the annual international GLBT diving event.

One hundred and twenty-one LGBT divers were able to join us in Thailand and raise $68,580 (USD) in charitable funds to make the event a success, she said. The recipients must be GLBT health charities and will be named in January.

SUBS had 20 members at the event, which club co-president Matt Kaine said was its biggest contingent yet.

Thailand was only the second time they went outside the Caribbean so it was really great that so many came, he said. Because we’ve been going for four or five years, we see people who we only see there and it’s a bit like family.

The Australian team’s charity auction items also proved popular, including a hospitality package with BGF-donated Mardi Gras tickets, aussieBum package, didgeridoo and various beach and sporting gear from Australian sporting teams.

Being from Australia we tend to err on the Australian kind of stuff, Kaine added.
Diving For Life will return to the Caribbean next year at Bonaire.

SUBS normally holds a NSW event every month. Next will be the SUBS Mardi Gras Dive, which will be a boat drive from Rose Bay wharf on Saturday 21 February.
