Olympic diving champion Matthew Mitchum has been nominated for the prestigious Sport Performer of the Year award, but needs your help to win it.

Mitchum, who won fans and admiration worldwide after a stunning performance in Beijing and for having the courage to become Australia’s first openly gay Olympic athlete, has been nominated for The Age’s Sport Performer of the Year award.

Mitchum has put a call out to the community to show their support and put their votes in for the publicly-elected award.

It would be great if you could take a few minutes out to keep the votes ticking along in support of my performance in Beijing, he wrote in an email to supporters.

The only way I can take out this wonderful honour and cap off a remarkable year is through your support, so please vote, encourage friends and family to vote and keep my golden dream alive.

info: To cast your vote, head to www.performerawards.com.au. The winner will be announced on November 26.
