Retracing bear history with Pride

Retracing bear history with Pride

“Bears has become such an important part of gay culture that it’s surprising how relatively recent the movement actually is,” journalist Kerry Bashford said.

“It’s one of the few post-Stonewall subcultures to have developed independently of mainstream gay society and it has become a fellowship with such profile and power, it is now very much a mainstream force all of its own.”

These days men identify as Bears as readily as they identify as gay and for many of us we have found a place where we feel we finally fit.

Harbour City Bears (HCB) is looking for your help in retracing their ‘paws’ prints and documenting their history. This is a real big deal for the club and we are working with Australia’s premier gay historian Garry Wotherspoon to ensure the project is of the highest standard.

If you have any information, press clippings, photos, etc and you think they have significance in HCB’s history we’d love to hear from you.

We are looking at three different periods: 1995 – 2000, 2001 – 2005 and 2006 – present. Forward your contribution/s to [email protected]

Ole! Ole! Ole! Yes folks, we may be enjoying the cooler months in Sydney but we’re heading straight to the heat of the Mediterranean. Welcome to Bear Pride 2011 — the celebration starts here!

August 25 sees the start of Bear Pride 2011, the follow-on from our successful event last year.

Over four days we have scheduled a dinner, a chocolate tour, a movie matinee, a dance party with BearNation from Melbourne, a sauna disco and a farewell BBQ.

Be part of this Bear Pride winter celebration and check out our event details at www.bearpride.com.au

Hopefully we will see you there.
