Good sports – Heave to

The establishment some 10 years ago of the Melbourne Argonauts Rowing Club was the beginning of a sport-focused group which has achieved success on many levels.

Medals and regattas won, personal best times for crews and high regard within the ran

ks of Rowing Victoria point to a well-organised group.

It is a difficult sport to participate in on an ad hoc basis (unless you are a single sculler). For the bigger boats, for each crew member, a partner is critical to each training session.

The commitment many young rowers made during school or university days and the impact on their social lives leaves many ‘washed up’ or ‘burned out’. Just as they are about to make the transition to the highly competitive adult ranks, they veer away from the sport altogether.

Settling into a career, out of money to travel any longer, or just having fled the intensity for a couple
of years is all it takes to look again at a sport they once loved. Current Melbourne Argonauts president Jan-Maree Fraser says this group would be a welcome addition to the many rowers who form this vibrant club of 80 members.

The opportunity to just ‘jump on board’ for new rowers will not be available again until spring, as a new intake of beginners are finding their feet over the coming weeks and months. Experienced rowers can join any time. As with many of QSAM’s clubs, some crews are fiercely competitive, others love the physicality, the community and the rowing family.
