Last week’s story on how gay groups such as PFLAG are apparently recruiting children into the LGBTI community and lifestyle seriously boils my blood.
At face value, to an ignorant bigot, I can see why some things that we as a community do could be seen as recruiting — to an ignorant bigot.
Yes, we do celebrate our sexualities and try to normalise it within society. Yes, we do encourage people to be themselves, no matter their age.
But if creating a world where there is no discrimination based on sexual orientation, and helping people be themselves is seen by some as more of a shady ‘militaristic’ enlistment program, well, I think that reflects more on the idiocy of these blind bigots.
I searched the internet for some stories on gay recruitment, most of which seem to occur in the USA. Disgusting to say the least.
Not disgusting because of the content, but just disgusting how little these people seem to understand about LGBTI people and organisations.
I wasn’t aware we were fighting to have the age of consent lowered. Were you? No? Well, that’s probably because we aren’t.
We did, however, ask to have the age of consent equal to that of our heterosexual counterparts. Because, you know, if a girl can take a pounding at 16, why can’t I?
We are also criticised for going into schools and saying that being gay is OK and you shouldn’t be bullied for it. These people obviously aren’t aware that teens are dying due to bullying by their kids in schools that we all pay for!
And they (mostly Christians and religious types, I will point out) have the audacity to say we are recruiting, when they openly evangelise in not only schools, but on the streets and even at your front door.
If I signed up to being gay, then it happened very naturally as I can’t recall signing any papers.
But years of depression, bullying and fear of not being accepted for who I am feel like just yesterday.

Has hard I try I can’t recall an occasion when two men or for that matter two women knocked on my door and said they were recruiting for a local Gay Group. I do however recall dozens of earnest young men and women often with kids in tow from various Church groups. Some wanted to recruit me into churches where I would not be allowed a blood transfusion if I had cancer, others wanted to save me from from evil and the clutches of Catholicism. Some very earnest ones mostly from Utah wanted me to wear only white shirts black trousers, tight underpants and believe Jesus had made a second coming in, where else, the USA.
Had two gay men popped round and knocked on my door I would have asked them in which is something I have never done for that other mob, more tea vicar?

My understanding is the law doesn’t care about two 16 year olds having sex… but they do care about a 31 year old sleeping with a 16 year old.

Well, yes Craig, thats my point. We are fighting for the lowering of age of consent so that it is equal to that of Heterosexuals.
I was shocked to find that my ex technically molested me on schoolies!
I believe we are (kinda passively) fighting to have the age of consent reduced in Queensland.
Yes, sadly it is the Christians and religious types who, you’re right.. have their own conscription methods. We do less recruiting… preferring to focus on normalising the stigma attached to being gay for gay people mostly.
The majority of people have little idea what we have to fight for in order to normalise their ignorance.
I want to be less harsh on Christians though; centuries of ‘liberation’ have left them that way…
I strongly dislike your articles, however this time I agree with you. I dont think anyone signs up too be gay, nor do I feel they choose to brand themself as “Gay” either.
Im sure boys and girls all over Australia could have saved themselves from a lot of grief, going through schooling etc… I don’t think anyone willingly decides to turn gay because someone is telling them to wave a rainbow flag at Mardi Gras….
