A sleek new work from SDC

Sydney Dance Company (SDC) artistic director Rafael Bonachela continues his winning streak with the company this month with the Sydney premiere of his international hit, The Land of Yes and The Land of No.

Chinese-born company member Chen ‘Kevin’ Wen told the Star Observer the pressure mounted with each new show that continued the SDC’s run of packed houses and rave reviews.

“There’s definitely pressure with each new show, but for me, I have to dance with my heart, my soul and my integrity and deliver something that is going to surprise me as well as the audience,” he said.

“There’s a lot going on in this piece, and it’s slightly different from what we’ve done in the past. It’s cleaner and it’s more clean-cut. There are 11 vignettes telling a story across two sections, and they’re all interwoven.”

This latest SDC production comes just after news that Bonachela has extended his contract with the company for another three years.

Wen said he and the other dancers were happy to have more time to strengthen their creative bonds with the Spanish-born choreographer.

“We’re all on the same page as Rafael, and we all trust him very much. It’s challenging — there are 17 dancers — but if we can keep the consistency and integrity up, I know each new piece we present will shine through.”
