The Sircus is coming to town

Brisbane noir outfit Silver Sircus makes its Melbourne live debut this month at the Butterfly Club.

As frontwoman Lucinda Shaw told the Star Observer, she and her fellow band members were happier playing under the guise of a cabaret act than as a rock band.

“I come from a theatrical background, and a lot of the performers I’m influenced by, I think of them as actors who sing,” she said. “People like Marianne Faithfull, people who have lots of gorgeous gritty life experience they want to embody in their music.

“Sometimes a seated audience with open ears is best for that, whereas in a big venue with alcohol and chatting, that can get lost.”

Shaw will bring four members of the eight-piece band to Melbourne, including drummer and composer James Lees. The pair’s working relationship pre-dates Silver Sircus, going back to 1994 and the formation of their previous band, ISIS.

“He’s a producer at heart — he loves to layer things. If I present a simple song of mine on guitar or piano, he can instantly hear all the arrangements and flesh it out. We complement each other so well.”

The band will preview songs from their upcoming debut album To The Place That Is Home, plus their well-received live cover of Nick Cave’s murder ballad Little Water Song.
