PRIDE colours are shining bright across tropical northern Queensland as Cairns Tropical Pride festival kicked off over the weekend.

Organisers have arranged over a week’s worth of events in what they hope to be their biggest and best festival yet.

The main festivities started off on Saturday with the Out! Cairns Splash pool party that kept pumping well into the night.

Sore heads were nursed the following day at a chilled-out beach party held at Cairn’s exclusive LGBTI resort, Turtle Cove.

This year’s festival includes 10 events held over nine days for local LGBTI community along with interstate and international visitors.

Next on the week’s agenda is Tuesday night’s movie night featuring the Queensland premiere screening of Melbourne film Submerge and a Q&A with filmmaker Kat Holmes.

Other events in the line-up include Wednesday night’s “show and tell” for Indigenous trans* sistagirls and their friends to share their unique stories and experiences.

Thursday offers a couple of events, including the Senior’s Luncheon at Turtle Cove that aims to celebrate and honour the history and struggle faced by LGBTI community elders.

The Pride Ride also kicks off that afternoon, where anyone with wheels is invited to help take over the Cairn’s Esplanade.

Empowered and strong women will be the focus of Friday’s festivities with an evening of live music and wine at the Proud Women’s Dance night, held at the Green Ant Cantina.

A highlight of every year’s festival is the Pride float that aims to take home the coveted title of the Cairns Festival Parade’s best float.

Finishing off with Tropical Pride’s signature event on Sunday, Fair Day is a day for the entire LGBTI community along with their family and friends to come together.

Celebrating all things community in the lush surrounds of Cairn’s premiere entertainment venue, the Tanks Art Centre, this is event also features drag races, roller derby demonstrations, circus workshops, cabaret acts, live music and family fun.
