Sydney calls on Government to allow same-sex marriage

The City of Sydney has declared its support for marriage equality and called on the Federal Parliament to amend the Marriage Act to legalise same-sex marriage.

The resolution, introduced by Sydney Lord Mayor, Clover Moore, also included a declaration of support for the upcoming marriage equality rally outside the ALP National Conference on December 3.

The motion was passed unanimously by councillors from across the political spectrum.

The resolution read, “It is resolved that Council: A) call upon the Australian Parliament to amend the Marriage Act to enable same sex couples to marry and to ensure that same sex marriages solemnised overseas are recognised in Australia;”

“(B) call upon all political parties and individual Members of Parliament to support these amendments;”

“(C) support the Rally for Marriage Equality planned for Saturday 3 December by: promoting the Rally through the City’s media outlets and online presence; flying the Rainbow Flag from the Town Hall, and Rainbow banners where practicable on Friday 2 to Sunday 4 December; and requesting staff to continue their good work in liaising with the Rally organisers to ensure a safe, peaceful and successful rally.”

Australian Marriage Equality national convener Alex Greenwich welcomed the City’s support.

“Not only does this accurately reflect the huge support for same-sex marriage in Sydney, it also has sends a powerful message of hope to the majority of Australians who want to see marriage equality happen,” Greenwich said.

“We call on other local government areas to follow Sydney’s lead and endorse full equality for same-sex couples.”

Moore said that loving gay and lesbian couples were still being denied the certainty and formal public recognition of their relationships that only marriage can provide.

“A claim bandied about is that denying same sex couples the right to marry is essential to protect marriage,” Moore said, “That is like the illogical claim last century that women had to be denied the vote to protect democracy.”

  1. You can get married in the state but the catholic church/bible only recognises a ‘true marriage in the eyes of God’ as being male and female. Same sex goes against the laws of nature – argue as much as you like its a fact. People are just to weak to stand up for what is normal these days. As for Clover Moore and the whole Labour party – they are off the planet – they have done nothing good for this country

  2. Normal gays? As opposed to all those ABnormal gays?
    Good one davo.
Further proof that the desire for marriage is driven by internalised homophobia.

  3. Having a picket fence, a marriage, and a monogamous relationship is not a fantasy, it is a reality – except we can’t get married in Australia.

What has been great about recent coverage of gay notables lately has been the coverage of Justice Kirby and of coverage of Bob Brown and their respective partners – fairly NORMAL Gay people living fairly normal lives – although at the top of their respective careers and in the public spotlight.

  4. “…sequined covered freaks who run around/sleep around.”

If that line appeared in the mainstream press or was twittered by some sports ‘hero’ web sites like this would be baying for blood.

Yes, the media does tend to caricature gays and Mardi Gras but your fantasies of marriage and picket fences is just trying to replace that caricature with another.

  5. Baz I don’t understand your comment? Being gay isn’t where you live or if you run around/sleep around, that’s how a person lives their life through their choices, lifestyle choice.
So what I say is not negative thank you very much, and yes I am GAY.

  6. ‘Mark of Sydney’ is another example of someone making an argument for marriage by saying negative things about being gay. Not good enough!

  7. I live in a country area and I am building a house the same as many people, no person in our area has an issue. Most of the gay people in our area live as any other person. People like Clover send a strong message to faraway places, and that is herd by people like my friends son who 17 and gay, and struggling with his sexuality and depression. Her words light up the darkness, and I have no doubt add to the wellbeing of many other young people who are struggling to come to terms with their sexuality also.

    Thank you Clover!

  8. Thank you Clover for standing up for us Gay men in the burbs who have a white picket fence and pets as children,we want gay marriage and too be recognized as hard working tax paying Australians just trying to get by.
And we want the media to stop portraying us as sequined covered freaks who run around/sleep around. We just want a fair go,thanks

  9. Love you Clover!!!! The Labor Party will be asking for trouble if they don’t support Marriage Equality at the conference.
