Transgender icon Carmen Rupe will be honoured with a memorial float in this year’s Mardi Gras Parade.

The Carmen Rupe Memorial Trust (CRMT) has announced a 100-person float and marching group called the ‘Carmen Sea Of Love’ will celebrate Rupe’s life and legacy at the March 3 event.

CRMT spokesperson Kelly Glanney said the entry is a chance for those who may not have had a chance to farewell the community trailblazer to pay their respects.

“We’ve pulled together an immensely talented and creative design team to produce our float and many other people are now coming to this project brimming with love and admiration for Carmen, totally committed to making this event as fabulous as humanly possible with the limited time and resources we have at our disposal,” Glanney said.

Local divas Christy McNicol, Del Williams and Koko D’Vyne will offer their assistance to glam up proceedings, but Glanney said the group is also looking to recruit other participants to join in.

“Our hope is that this trans-Tasman ‘Sea of Love’ Mardi Gras parade production [will] bring together a wonderfully diverse group of Carmen’s friends and and many admirers to commemorate, celebrate and pay homage to the remarkable life of Carmen Rupe amidst a cavalcade of sound, colour and movement.”
