Homophobic Nigerian preacher to visit Australia

Enoch AdeboyeHomophobic Nigerian preacher Enoch Adeboye has announced a tour of Australia and the Pacific in November to visit branches of his global church.

The Redeemed Christian Church of God aims to have branches in every country in the world, and Adeboye will be visiting Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth throughout November with the aim of growing the church’s Australian presence.

Adeboye, who calls himself ‘General Overseer’ of the church, made international headlines earlier this year when he claimed same-sex marriage legislation would wipe out humanity within the next 20 years.

He has called homosexuality “evil” and “anathema to the will of God,” serving as an influential voice in Nigeria, where gay people experience significant persecution and violence.

Nigerian human rights advocate Leo Igwe published an open letter urging countries on Adeboye’s Pacific tour to protest his visits.

“Due to the sermons of homophobic clerics like Pastor Adeboye, there is a growing trend of attacks and violence against homosexuals in Nigeria,” Igwe wrote.

“We should not allow this vicious trend to spread and take hold in other parts of the globe. We need to use this opportunity to send a strong message to Pastor Adeboye and other gay bashing African clerics that their gospel of hatred and intolerance has no place in the Pacific Region and that their churches have no future in Australia.”

NSW President of Amnesty International Australia Senthorun Raj spoke to the Star Observer about the ongoing persecution faced by LGBTI people in Nigeria.

“It is extremely concerning that Nigeria continues to have laws that criminalise same-sex relationships and prohibit the public expression of homosexuality. Not only do these laws solidify the idea that homosexuality is a disease or perversion, but they also undermine the ability of LGBTI people in Nigeria to access justice when faced with discrimination, vilification or harassment,” Raj said.

“Nigeria must immediately repeal these archaic laws in order to respect the dignity of LGBTI people and their freedom to associate without fear of persecution.”

Some within Australia’s LGBTI community have called on the Australian Government to refuse Adeboye’s visa on the grounds of a risk the preacher would vilify the gay community, a legitimate basis for denying a person entry.

Opponents of Dutch anti-Muslim politician Geert Wilders argued against a visa being issued to him on the same grounds, although Wilders’ visa was eventually granted.

The Star Observer contacted the Australian branch of the Redeemed Christian Church of God who will be hosting Adeboye’s visit, but has not received comment.

  1. Pastor Adeboye is simply exercising his fundamental human rights. You cannot stop him from exercising his religious beliefs. If you do, that may amount to discrimination. Pastor Adeboye would tour Australia whether you like it or not. Afterall we are still struggling to get legislation regarding same-sex marriage.
Although Jesus loves everyone including gay/lesbian population that does not mean you should suppress others in the argument. Pastor does not condemn people who are gay or lesbian, he only expressed his believe.
The church is for everyone and pastor Adeboye would welcome everyone to his church

  2. The westerners introduced christianity to Africa including Nigeria and we accepted as per the expectations. So now that the westerners think christianity is a fraud and the Holy Bible isn’t true, it’s difficult to withdraw the Christian values from developing nations. You guys cannot have it both ways.

  3. The level of comments is damn poor – using the n word or abusing Christians ISN’T helpful – basically “nasty evil man calls us nasty names so we anonymously call him nasty names” – useless, cowardly & dumb!

DO something smart. Look at other c**p this guy says & take the attach to these lying deceiving peddlers of everything that is opposite to what Jesus taught.

    e.g.
I used to live in the UK which has many more African immigrants & transplanted African churches than here. These churches usually claim AIDS cures (often telling people they didn’t need meds) & people dying as a result were sadly regular, sadly small headlines.

This “Redeemed Christian Church of God” headed by Enoch Adeboye is still up to the same evil nonsense. If you don’t want to see these lies in Australia write to the Scott Morrison http://www.minister.immi.gov.au/ & your state Health departments demanding they do something about this real threat to Australias heath that these lies are. Get this guy’s visa revoked/refused.

    • also in Australia the venue’s booked seem to be in large hotels who do care about their reputations. A polite email to their head office PR team pointing out your concern that they are hosting an event linked to homophobic & AIDS denial nonsense, that you frequently travel for business etc (if true) & that you’d be interested in their response prior to making a decision on if you will use the chain in future that you will be sharing with your extensive facebook & twitter networks (if true) might be a productive response.

  6. David,

Nice comment you did give. There is a place like Hell where evildoers in this world will get eternal punishment. But be very sure that each person that be responsible and called to account for his deeds. It’s not a case of someone else bearing another person’s burden or sins. And likewise, there is a Paradise – a place of reward for those who followed the dictates of their Creator- He Who has determined the best way for our bodies with all its numerous organs to function without any intervention. One must believe that there is no deity truly worthy of worship except the One Unique Creator

  7. Gods and religions are group-level adaptations for producing cohesiveness and trust for the in-crew. They allow people to achieve together what they couldn’t on their own (but that description also applies to the mafia). Religions are about people belonging, and once they join the “team” and sacralise, they then accept whatever their leaders tell them and they tend to accept unquestioningly. Believing, doing and belonging are 3 interlinked aspects of religiosity. often their beliefs are post hoc constructions to justify what they’ve just done, or to support the groups they belong to. Sacredness blinds people to the arbitrariness of their practice. This bloke is exploiting this characteristic, particularly in a region where “belonging” gives a greater sense of safety.

  8. I truly do hope there is a hell (although im intelligent enough, unlike these lousy “Christians”, to know that such a place does not exist) because this evil excuse for a human being clearly belongs there.
