Good sports

For the volunteers, the Team Sydney board and all the regular players who showcased their sports clubs, last Sunday’s Sports Day Out is over. Just starting, however, are the hundred or so people who signed on for more information and met club organisers for the first time.
Team Sydney’s main purposes are to encourage participation on a local scale and support the clubs that provide the wherewithal for participating. At the other end of the scale are the big gay and lesbian sporting events; focus points for training and fabulous excursions to boot.
We monitor such events for content and viability to advise on standards provided. Not everyone can manage international travel so we welcomed the 1st Asia Pacific Outgames organisers to Sports Day Out. This will be a high standard event on our own doorstep. Well, Melbourne is not too far away.
There will be Outgames in Copenhagen, Gay Games in Cologne as well as the Eurogames, the Straits Games and more; and let’s not forget the World Masters Games will be happening right here. All of which got us thinking about uniforms!
It is a growing trend for participants’ shirts to identify a sport first and city or country second. Team Sydney has retired the navy and gold, Australia’s alternative colours, and now offers a new design of shirt for travelling Sydneysiders who want to show their city of origin. The shirts are a lighter, royal blue with gold panels at the sides instead of across the shoulders. The design is not as in your face as the one for North America in 2006.
Ideal participation wear for some sports, the shirts are just as suitable for shopping or the café set. The fabric is the latest iteration of the type we used last year, softer than before, uncrushable and stain resistant, perfect for travel. We will keep the same design at least until 2010 so buy now knowing your shirt will be current for the future. See them on the Team Sydney website.
In his address at Sports Day Out, Sydney Deputy Lord Mayor Tony Pooley spoke of the high regard the City of Sydney has for its gay and lesbian community. Thank you Tony for attending and for the council’s financial support. Team Sydney hopes our sporting community does our city proud when it competes elsewhere. In a Team Sydney shirt, of course!
